In dire need of a break from hot sweaty boat work, Conor and I decided to embark on an adventure that led to watching a panther eat chicken feet, a monkey attempt to steal our camera and avoiding a giraffe’s kiss 12 kilometers south of Puerto Vallarta.
The privately owned Mismaloya Zoo is at the end of three bus rides way from our marina (Directo, Centro, Buca or Mismaloya) and a mile walk down a dusty cobblestone street. The entry fee is 100 pesos per person (about $8 USD) and for an extra 50 pesos you receive a bag of carrots, bread, pellets, and corn to feed the animals. The zoo takes you on a meandering and colorful path so close to the animals it feels like you are in a petting zoo with wild animals. I’m positive that it is not entirely safe, but then I remember that there are no rules in Mexico. This is a country where lawsuits are far rarer than in the US. Get eaten by a lion? So? It was your own darn fault for getting too close! That reminds me, for future reference, I need to make sure that accidental dismemberment is included in our policy…
