We are newlyweds that thought it would be a cool idea to buy a boat and sail south to tropical beaches of Mexico and maybe beyond. Sounds easy and luxurious, right?…. Oh, we knew so little in April ’11. This photo was taken soon after we purchased our new (to us) boat, Moondance, a 1981 Islander 36. In May ’11 we decided to sign up for the Baja Haha, an annual cruising rally that takes 160ish boats from San Diego to Cabo every year. In mid-August we took our boat in to Hirschfeld Yacht Maintenance for a new Beta Marine engine and we never looked back. We worked 12-16 hour days every single day on the boat while I also trained for the NW marathon and Conor continue to work. Check out the Moondance Refit page to see the details of all the cool upgrades we made.
We finally made it out of the Gate on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 to head down to San Diego for the start of the Haha just 6 short days away. (Sailboats travel about as fast as a horse!) We decided to stop at Monterey Bay Harbor about 18 hours later and it was there we realized (due to a couple of reasons) that there was no way to make the Haha in time. So…. now the FUN begins! Without the stress of a schedule, we can cruise down the coast, take some more time to check out new marinas and anchorages, get more comfortable with the boat, and enjoy winter in Mexico at our own pace. Happy you made it out. Mark and I are going kayaking tomorrow in Benicia. We will keep up with you from Facebook.
Thanks Christy, hope you had a great kayaking trip. The water is strangely both tiring and rejuvinating at the same time
Lanea & Conor
Hi Lanea and Conor,
Congratulations! You’re finally on your way. We’re glad Dan is able to join you on the trip down. It’s great to have his expertise.
Love,
Tia Irma and Tio Jim + Max
Thanks Tia and Tio. We have appreciated Dan’s expertise a great deal, especially when anchoring at Santa Cruz Island. We are learning so much from this experience and like all challenges in life, only appreciate the knowledge gained from each experience after the dust has settled and we have had time to rest. xoxo Lanea and Conor
The pics are great from both before the start of the adventure and current updates. Keep up the great work and enjoy this time you have.
Love n smooches,
Mom & Papa
